Buying Cannabis

What You Need to know

As the smoke clears following the legalization of recreational marijuana on January 1, 2018, San Diego is...calm. In fact, thanks to the wide variety of products now available to locals, lots of folks are finding that they are calmer than usual, getting better sleep, feeling less pain, and having more fun. According to the pot pros at Torrey Holistics, this is the new normal, and it’s all going to be okay. We asked them to give us the story on life in the cannabis industry post-prohibition.

Q: What was it like waking up to a new reality on January 1st?
It was exciting and very, very busy! We had a line around the building for weeks and did a lot of re-stocking, but it was wonderful to celebrate this historic time with the city of San Diego.

Q: Okay, so what does a new customer need to do to purchase cannabis products?
First, you must be 21 years of age and have a valid ID (driver’s license, passport, Federal ID card) to purchase cannabis products. It is best to bring cash as the industry is still a cash only business in California. Upon arrival, one of our friendly cannabis consultants will talk with you one-on-one about your needs, answer your questions and walk you through your options.

Q:  Since legalization is now a reality in California, visitors to the state should know the rules. What are the regulations in place as far as purchasing and consuming marijuana?
According to California law, the daily purchase limits for Adult Use customers are 28.5 grams of non-concentrated cannabis or 8 grams of concentrated cannabis or 6 immature cannabis plants. For medical patients, the daily purchase limit is 8 ounces of medicinal cannabis. If a patient’s valid physician’s recommendation contains an amount exceeding the daily limit, the patient may purchase the amount recommended by the physician. It is important to remember that the city will not be lax about enforcing the laws. It is unlawful for a person under the influence of ANY drug to drive a car, and public use of marijuana is illegal.

Q: For those not familiar, what is the difference between THC products and CBD products and how will people know which is right for them?
Great question! We carry hundreds of products in our store, which can be a bit intimidating, but our staff provides one-on-one assistance so each customer gets the information and the products that they need. In a nutshell, THC is the component of cannabis that produces mind-altering effects. Within the realm of THC products are various strains, which have varied benefits depending on one’s needs and preferences. CBD also comes from cannabis, but does not produce that sort of high. CBD products are widely used for sleep, relaxation, pain relief, etc. We even carry CBD products for pets!

Q: San Diego is well known for its craft beer industry. We have been wondering if craft cannabis will be the next big thing?
Craft Cannabis has arrived! Torrey Holistics already carries brands that provide flower from small family farms that take great care in the production of their small batch marijuana. In fact, there are already so many craft varietals of marijuana on the market that our cannabis consultants have become like wine sommeliers in fancy restaurants who contain a wealth of knowledge about the subtleties of each brand or strain. We think that carefully crafted cannabis is not yet as prevalent as craft beer only because it’s still difficult to get a license to produce it, but we think it’s here to stay.

Q: What are the options for people who are interested in the benefits of marijuana but do not want to smoke it?
There are a great many cannabis products available now for those who do not wish to smoke it! Some options for non-smokers include topicals, beverages, patches, and a wide variety of edibles.

Q:  California voted to legalize marijuana and public opinion is changing about the benefits of marijuana, but what will it take to completely eliminate the stigma attached to marijuana?
Educating the public! Torrey Holistics is very pleased to have been chosen by the state of California’s Bureau of Cannabis Control as the first dispensary in the state to be licensed to sell Adult Use cannabis, and we take our role as a leader in the community very seriously. We now offer Cannabis 101 classes at our dispensary, and we make it a point to get out into the community to educate and advocate for the benefits of cannabis. It’s our goal to debunk “the stoner perception”...that everyone who uses marijuana is dazed, confused, and uses it to excess. Torrey Holistics is about providing professional, reliable, friendly service and offering people a better quality of life.

Q:  Is it important for people to buy from a legal dispensary?
It is essential to purchase marijuana from a legal, licensed dispensary to ensure that the products you purchase are safe, lab-tested, and compliant with all California standards.
